8dfda0979d layout: Let TableSlotCell store an IndependentFormattingContext (#42778)
`TableSlotCell` was storing the `BlockFormattingContext` and the
`LayoutBoxBase` in separate fields. Now it will store an entire
`IndependentFormattingContext` in a single field.

In particular, this fixes the issue that `TableSlotCell::repair_style()`
wasn't calling `BlockFormattingContext::repair_style()`. Now we can just
rely on the correct `IndependentFormattingContext::repair_style()`.

Testing: Adding a new test

ff014d9889 layout: Extend damage propagation isolation to table cells and captions (#42717)
These two types of boxes should also be able to isolate damage during
propagation and serve as roots for box tree reconstruction, as their
contents are independent of their containing box.

Testing: This should not change testable behavior so is covered by
existing WPT tests.

042d95220a layout: Replace dirty root approach with flexible box tree layout (#42700)
Replace the old dirty root box tree layout approach with one that works
based on independent formatting contexts. Instead of just allowing a
single dirty root to be the source of box tree reconstruction, allow box
tree reconstruction to happen anywhere in the tree that can isolate box
tree damage from ancestors. This essentially combines damage propagation
and box tree construction into a single step.

There is currently one downside to this approach compared to the dirty
root approach which is that we currently cannot detect and start box
tree layout when the dirty has a compatible `display` and `position`
value. This can mean the scope of box tree layout extends further up the
tree. We will address this in a followup -- but have not noticed any
major performance implications (currently fragment tree layout is much
more expensive than box tree layout).

Benefits:
 1. Damage propagation now only happens under the dirty root.
 2. Future changes can limit the scope of damage up the tree and perhaps
preserve the inline content size cache between box tree rebuilds.

Testing: This should not change behavior in a testable way (we currently
do
not have robust performance tests), so WPT test results should not
change.

0c182904f5 layout: Clear dirty box tree nodes during damage traversal (#42596)
Instead of keeping dirty box tree nodes around after the damage
traversal, clear them readily (like `display: none` nodes). This
simplifies the logic during box tree reconstruction and also prepares
the damage traversal for future work.

In addition, restructure the logic of the damage traversal to make it a
bit easier to follow.

Testing: This shouldn't change observable behavior so should be covered
by existing
tests.

2a3f23c78d Upgrade Stylo to 2026-02-02 (#42361)
This continues #41916

Changelog:
- Upstream:
360787fff5...7cd2a178d3
- Servo fixups:
e4d50e905e...d9831d464b

Stylo tracking issue: https://github.com/servo/stylo/issues/305

In particular, this adds support for `alignment-baseline` and
`baseline-shift`, and turns `vertical-align` into a shorthand of them.
This also introduces `vertical-align: center`.

Testing: Various tests improve. Some internal tests are updated because
they were wrong. And some fail because we don't support presentation
attributes on SVG elements.

8637ee6388 layout: Simplify logic for border specificity (#42264)
When CSS tables collapse borders, we need to compare their specificities
to determine which border wins. One thing that the specificity takes
into account is the border-style. We were manually mapping each possible
BorderStyle to its priority, but Stylo already provides Ord, so we can
just use that instead.

7e39dfdcee layout: Cleanup clear_fragment_layout_cache() (#40040)
`LayoutBox::clear_fragment_layout_cache()` was just redirecting to the
`clear_fragment_layout_cache()` method of inner structures, until
reaching `LayoutBoxBase` where the work is actually done.

So this patch gets the `LayoutBoxBase` first, and then calls the method
on it. To do so, `LayoutBox::with_base_fold()` is added as a non-mutable
version of the existing `LayoutBox::with_base_mut_fold()`. But since we
the return value doesn't matter, `LayoutBox::with_each_base()` is also
added as a tiny helper around `LayoutBox::with_base_fold()`.

7999d114e5 layout: Add Contents::Widget(NonReplacedContents) for HTML widgets (#39928)
Widgets like `<input>` and `<textarea>` have various behaviors similar
to replaced elements, but aren't fully replaced.

Therefore, this adds a new case into the `Contents` enum so that it can
represent the three states: non-replaced, fully replaced, and widget.
This means that `NonReplacedContents::OfTextControl` can be dropped.

The code is refactored in order to centralize the logic to identify
widgets in a single place.

This fixes some places where we weren't checking if the element was a
widget, e.g. in `construct_for_root_element()`. But I think the change
isn't currently observable in practice.

15116d2cae layout: Resolve definite percentages when determining margin collapse (#32064)
Previously we were treating a definite 0% as zero, but a definite 100%
that resolved into 0px as non-zero.

That didn't make much sense, so this patch stops checking the computed
values, and instead checks the layout values which have already resolved
percentages. This also implies that we will now take `max-block-size`
into account.

This brings Servo closer to Blink, but differs from Gecko and WebKit.

858208bd25 layout: Align table-cell contents safely (#39491)
As resolved in https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/12220, when

observable when there are collapsed rows.

4451ce0ef1 layout: Fix propagation of overflow to viewport (#39173)
This patch refactors the logic for propagating overflow to the viewport,
fixing various issues:
- Now we won't propagate from the root element if it has no box. Note
the fix isn't observable in Servo because we lack scrollbars.
- If the first `<body>` element has no box, we won't keep searching for
other `<body>` elements. This deviates from the spec, but aligns us with
other browsers.
- We won't propagate from the `<body>` if it has no box. We were already
handling `display: none` but not `display: contents`. This deviates from
the spec, but aligns us with other browsers.

Also, when we flag the root or `<body>` as having propagated `overflow`
to the viewport, we retrieve the `LayoutBoxBase`. Therefore, now we get
the computed style from the `LayoutBoxBase` in a single operation,
instead of first retrieving the style from the DOM element and then
getting the `LayoutBoxBase` from the box.

Testing: Adding more tests. We were only failing one of them, but it's
hard to test the fixes given that we don't show scrollbars. The tests
that were already passing are useful too, e.g. Firefox fails one of
them.

A LayoutBox typically has one LayoutBoxBase, or none in the case of

It's expected that script queries be able to interact with collapsed

ee7c1d9109 layout: Use ServoThreadSafeLayoutNode in more places (#38626)
Use `ServoThreadSafeLayoutNode` in more places in layout rather than
`ServoLayoutNode`. The former is meant to be used during layout, but
layout 2020 was written against the latter. In general, this reduces the
amount of conversion to the thread-safe version in many places in
layout.

In addition, an unused iterator from the `script` crate
`ServoThreadSafeLayoutNodeChildrenIterator` is replaced with the child
iterator from `layout`. The `layout` version must be directly in
`script` now as it uses the dangerous variants of `next_sibling` and
`first_child`, which allow encapsulating the unsafe bits into one
module.

This will ultimately be useful for storing the layout data of
pseudo-element children of pseudo-elements properly.

3d2f0d1be5 layout: Fix depends_on_block_constraints logic (#38318)
The logic was wrong, sometimes we weren't setting it to true on flex
containers that needed it, and then as a workaround we were setting it
to to true on flex items that didn't need it.

For example, this testcase had 5 cache misses when stretching the items,
now we will avoid laying them out again:

Also, the workaround wasn't always working, e.g. it failed to stretch

51367c22a6 layout: Store most anonymous pseudo-elements in box slots (#37941)
Previously, anonymous boxes, such for anonymous table parts were not
associated with their non-pseudo ancestor DOM nodes. This presents a
problem when it comes time to clear layout data during incremental

stored in their non-pseudo ancestor DOM nodes, allowing for any number
to be placed there.

This trades a bit of performance for space, as just adding a vector to
the node would add something like 24 bytes of storage to every node.

into `BoxSlot::take_layout_box_if_undamaged()`.

Testing: This should not change observable behavior and is thus covered
by existing WPT tests.

82f7f761d9 layout: Add incremental box tree construction for table caption (#37849)
This change extends incremental box tree updates to table captions. In
addition, calls to `LayoutBox::invalidate_cached_fragment()` are moved
to the damage calculation traversal.

Testing: This should not change observable behavior and is thus covered
by existing WPT tests.

647122d0f6 layout: Stop using Rayon in single-threaded mode (#37832)
In layout, some parts of the code were still using parallel iterators
from Rayon even when single-thread layout was activated. This change
modifies those parts to use non-parallel iterators when
`LayoutContext::use_rayon` is not active.

Testing: It's very hard to make an automated test for this, but I've
manually
verified this by building with tracing and observing that layout runs
only on
a single thread now when loading https://servo.org.

7375d09887 layout: Remove TryFrom<Contents> for NonReplacedContents (#37815)
This implementation is quite confusing as it makes it harder to tell
that we are just looking for the case that `Contents` contains
`NonReplacedContents`.

Testing: This shouldn't have any functional change, so is covered by
existing tests.

69ff4afa58 Rename script_layout_interface to layout_api (#37591)
Now that we are standardizing on the `_traits` crates becoming `_api`
and exposing the API of the crate that they get their name from [^1],
`script_layout_interface` becomes `layout_api` as it exposes the API for
`layout` that is used by `script` This brings the crate in line with the
naming of the other ones in `shared`.

04bcafa140 chore: Simplify tracing with servo_tracing macro (#36661) (#37497)
This pull request refactors existing tracing annotations to leverage the
new `servo_tracing::instrument` macro introduced in #36573.

Specifically, the following transformations were applied:
- Removed `#[cfg_attr(feature = "tracing", ...)]` wrappers.
- Replaced `tracing::instrument` with `servo_tracing::instrument`.
- Removed `level = "trace"`
- Removed `fields(servo_profiling = true)` from tracing attributes
however retained others like `name`. `skip type`

Closes: #36661

9781f1241a layout: Move text decoration propagation to stacking context tree construction (#37069)
Text decorations have a special kind of propagation. Instead of
propating these during box tree construction, move propagation to
stacking context tree construction. This will allow for using a very
easy type of incremental layout when text decorations change. For
instance, when a link changes color during hovering over it, we can skip
all of box and fragment tree construction.

In addition, propagation works a bit better now and color and style
properly move down from their originating `Fragment`s.

This introduces three new failures, because now we are drawing the
text-decoration with the correct color in more places, which exposes an
issue we have with text-decorations not being drawn in relation to the
baseline (taking into account `vertical-align`).

Testing: There are tests for these changes.
Fixes #31736.

573663d502 layout: Correct damage propagation and style repair for repaint-only layout (#37004)
When making last-minute changes to the repaint-only layout pass, damage
propagation was broken, meaning that full layout was always done. This
change fixes that, meaning that times in the `blaster.html` test case
now reflect those described in the original commit message from #36978.

In addition, some style repair is now fixed:
- `InlineFormattingContext`s now keep a `SharedInlineStyles` for the
root of the IFC
which is updated during style repair.
 - `BlockFormattingContext`s now properly update their style.

These changes are verified by turning on repaint only layout for more
properties
in Stylo via servo/stylo#183.

Testing: Manual performance testing via `blaster.html`.

8808f9a468 layout: Add a repaint-only incremental layout mode (#36978)
This change adds the simplest kind of incremental layout. When Servo
detects that all style changes only require a repaint, only run stacking
context tree and WebRender display list generation. This means that
these kind of restyles do not need a re-layout. Instead, the existing
box and fragment trees will be used and the styles of damaged nodes will
be updated in their box and fragment tree nodes.

This requires a new style repair DOM traversal for nodes that have had
their style damaged. In addition, careful accounting of all the places
where we store style must happen in order ot update those styles.

Testing: This is covered by existing WPT tests as it should not change
observable behavior.

We have created a test case which shows a 50% speedup when run
in Servo, even though there still a long way to go to match the speed
of other browsers:

a0dd2c1beb layout: Share styles to inline box children via SharedInlineStyles (#36896)
`TextRun`s use their parent style to render. Previously, these styles
were cloned and stored directly in the box tree `TextRun` and resulting
`TextFragment`s. This presents a problem for incremental layout.
Wrapping the style in another layer of shared ownership and mutability
will allow updating all `TextFragment`s during repaint-only incremental
layout by simply updating the box tree styles of the original text
parents.

This adds a new set of borrows when accessing text styles, but also
makes it so that during box tree block construction
`InlineFormattingContext`s are created lazily and now
`InlineFormattingContextBuilder::finish` consumes the builder, making
the API make a bit more sense. This should also improve performance of
box tree block construction slightly.

Testing: This should not change observable behavior and thus is covered
by existing WPT tests.

348eede37b layout: Store shared styles for table backgrounds in SharedBackgroundStyle (#36893)
Table cells share background styles with their track and track group
boxes. When a track and track group style is repaired, this new data
structure will allow reparing the style of the cell `Fragment`s without
having to lay the table out again or walk through `Fragment`s and
individually repair their background styles.

Testing: This doesn't change behavior and is thus tested by existing
WPT tests.

d5e008fd6a layout: Use ServoLayoutNode directly instead of a generic impl (#36876)
This makes it so that layout is no longer generic on the node type,
depending directly on `script`'s `ServoLayoutNode`. In addition to
greatly simplifying layout, this is necessary because incremental layout
needs to be able to create pseudo-element styles without having a handle
on the original `impl LayoutNode`. We feel this is a reasonable
tradeoff.

Testing: No functional changes, so covered by existing WPT tests.
